Stone Island is an iconic Italian brand, founded in 1982 in Ravarino, Italy, by Massimo Osti. It all started with a chance discovery: Osti came across a two-sided and two-tone truck tarpaulin, which stood out for its rigidity and robust texture. In order to make the material workable, it underwent an intensive stonewash treatment.

The result was a garment with a unique, lived-in look and an unparalleled texture. This first experiment led to the creation of seven coats made from this special material that he called “Tela Stella”. The fabrics, reminiscent of the weathered look of coats waxed by sun and sea, immediately gave Stone Island a special place in the fashion world.

Stone Island takes inspiration from military uniforms and workwear, where functionality and structure are key. The iconic “Stone Island Badge,” featuring a compass rose, is applied to each garment and fastened with two buttons. This badge serves as the brand’s unmistakable symbol and is reminiscent of the insignia of military captains, emphasizing the brand’s affinity for uniformity and function.

In 1983, Carlo Rivetti purchased a 50% stake in Stone Island through the family business. This led to further growth and development of the brand, which soon became known for its innovative designs and technologies. Finally, in 1993, Carlo Rivetti and his sister took full control of Stone Island.

Under their leadership, several special collections were introduced, such as the 'Stone Island Ice Jackets' that were launched in the 1980s. These jackets were made of materials that changed colour with temperature changes, a revolutionary innovation that took the technical possibilities of fashion to a new level.

Another groundbreaking design was the 'Stone Island Reflective Jacket,' made from fabrics that reflect light in the dark. This feature quickly became a favorite among fans of the brand. Stone Island continued to distinguish itself through its focus on innovation, functionality and high-quality materials, making it a beloved brand among fashion lovers and collectors worldwide.
